Description

"Stargrazing" is a 24" x 18" oil on canvas that earns every inch of your attention. The horse grazes quietly in warm golden light, completely at ease, completely unbothered. Above it, a cumulus cloud rises in billowing peaks of peach and burnt orange against a blue sky so deep and clear it almost aches. The scale of the cloud against the smallness of the horse should feel overwhelming. Instead it feels exactly right.

Day is a realist painter from Greenville, South Carolina, originally rooted in McKinney, Texas, and the American West runs through everything she makes. Trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art with an MFA in sculpture from Clemson University, she brings a sculptor's instinct for form and weight to her painting. You can feel it here in the way the cloud sits in the sky, heavy and luminous and entirely convincing, and in the way the horse occupies the earth beneath it with such quiet certainty.

The painting is called "Stargrazing" and once you know that, you cannot unknow it. The horse is not just eating grass. It is doing something much more patient and much more hopeful than that.

This is a painting for a bedroom wall, a reading chair, a quiet corner of a room that needs something to slow it down. It will do that job beautifully, every single day.
